for French horn and piano
Score and parts
Redwoods is a set of three short movements for French horn and piano inspired by the incredible Redwood forests of Northern California. When I approached writing a solo work for French horn, I immediately thought of the grandeur and majesty of the Redwood trees. Each movement depicts a different scene within the forest.
The first movement, "A bird flies through the sunbeams," captures the fleeting, darting energy of a small creature navigating vast columns of light. The second movement, "Starlight through the canopy opening," is a study in quiet wonder. Where the first movement belongs to the daytime forest, this one inhabits the hour when the last light fades and the first stars appear in the gaps above. The third movement, "Their branches reach to the heavens," returns to the trees themselves. The Redwoods are among the tallest living things on earth, and there is something jubilant in the way they grow; the movement channels that expansive, unselfconscious joy, building toward a bright and open conclusion.
